Rush - Far Cry

Rush - Far Cry - Meaning of the song

"Far Cry" is a song by the Canadian progressive rock band Rush. It was released as the first single from Snakes & Arrows, their 2007 album. On March 12, 2007, it was released to radio, followed by a digital release four days later. On the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, the song peaked at number 22.

Guitarist Alex Lifeson had this to say about the song:

"It was almost as if we knew the song before we wrote it. We simply played it. That was pretty cool. That doesn't happen all that often. We were high-fiving and everything because it's always a relief when something like that happens."

The song came about as a result of a studio jam session between Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee. Neil Peart unintentionally left lyrics he'd just finished on the table, with the chorus highlighted. Lee began singing the chorus along with a section of the jam, and it seemed to fit, according to him.

Rush drummer Neil Peart wrote the lyrics about how his generation began great, concerned with peace and love, but ended far away: "It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit." It also discusses the homeless and their reliance on electronics.

Far Cry - Lyrics

Pariah dogs and wandering madmen Barking at strangers and speaking in tongues The ebb and flow of tidal fortune Electrical changes are charging up the young It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit It's a far cry from the way we thought we'd share it You can almost feel the current flowing You can almost see the circuits blowing One day I feel I'm on top of the world And the next it's falling in on me I can get back on I can get back on One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel, And the next it's rolling over me I can get back on I can get back on Whirlwind life of faith and betrayal Rise in anger, fall back, and repeat Slow degrees on the dark horizon Full moon rising lays silver at your feet It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit It's a far cry from the way we thought we'd share it You can almost feel the current flowing You can almost see the circuits blowing One day I feel I'm on top of the world And the next it's falling in on me I can get back on I can get back on One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel, And the next it's rolling over me I can get back on I can get back on It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit You can almost see the circle growing You can almost feel the planet glowing One day I feel I'm on top of the world And the next it's falling in on me I can get back on I can get back on One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel, And the next it's rolling over me I can get back on I can get back on One day I fly through a crack in the sky And the next it's falling in on me I can get back on I can get back on
