Scar Tissue is the third track and the lead single from the band's seventh studio album, Californication. The song was the band's first single after Dave Navarro's departure in 1998, with John Frusciante on guitar for the first time since 1993 single "Soul to Squeeze".
Anthony Kiedis, the band's lead singer, published his autobiography, Scar Tissue, in 2004. Some of the lyrics are explained in the book:
"Sarcastic Mr. Know-it-all" is Dave Navarro, whom Anthony refers to as "the King of sarcasm." "With the birds I'll share this lonely view," Anthony says, was inspired by birds he saw while singing outside Flea's house, and the line also refers to how he felt like an outsider looking in. Anthony was introduced to weed at the age of 12, but he first got high at the age of four. He was walking down the street with his father when his father blew marijuana smoke in his face.
