Audioslave - Show Me How to Live - Meaning of the song
"Show Me How to Live" is a song by American rock band Audioslave. It was released in June 2003 as the third single from their first album, Audioslave released in 2003. It peaked at number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, number 2 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks and number 4 in the Modern Rock Tracks.
The music video for the song is made of clips from the 1971 film Vanishing Point in which a white 1970 Dodge Challenger driven by a drug addict from Denver to San Francisco is involved in several car chases with police cars and motorcycles, and a Jaguar E-Type. The clips of a radio DJ (played by Cleavon Little) singing and dancing to 1970 music have been synchronized to the Audioslave song. Other parts have been remade with the band members, in the car driven by the lead singer Chris Cornell and playing in front of a small audience in the Nevada desert. The movie, and the video, ends with the muscle car deliberately crashing into a bulldozer road block set up by police.
In this song, Chris Cornell asks for help from God, saying that He created him, but now needs his guidance. There are a few religious references in the song, including "Nail in my hand," which is relates to the crucifixion of Jesus.
Near the end, Cornell created an interesting vocal effect by hitting his throat with the side of his hand to change the pitch of his voice.
Show Me How to Live - Lyrics
And with the early dawn Moving right along, I couldn't buy an eye-full of sleep And in the aching night under satellites, I was not received Built with stolen parts, a telephone in my heart, someone get me a priest, to put my mind to bed This ringing in my head, is this a cure or is this a disease? Nail in my head, from my creator You gave me life, now show me how to live Nail in my head, from my creator You gave me life, now show me how to live And in the after birth, on the quiet earth, let the stains remind you, you thought you made a man You better think again, before my role defines you Nail in my head, from my creator You gave me life, now show me how to live Nail in my head, from my creator You gave me life, now show me how to live And in your waiting hands, I will land, and roll out of my skin And in your final hours I will stand, ready to begin? Ready to begin? ready to begin? ready to begin? Nail in my head, from my creator You gave me life, now show me how to live Nail in my head, from my creator You gave me life, now show me how to live Show me how to live, show me how to live Show me how to live, show me how to live
